What is hair transplant and how it is performed?
Hair transplant is a surgical procedure that is performed with a simple method of extraction and implantation of hair grafts. In this procedure, the hair transplant surgeon extracts the active and healthy hair follicles from the donor area (usually, the back of the scalp). Then, the surgeon will make the incisions and implant those follicles in the balding area where the hair growth is thin or missing. This procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and the patient can go back home the same day after the surgery.
Which are the methods used for hair transplantation?
Basically, two methods are used in the hair transplantation procedure; FUE method that does not leave any major scar or FUT method that may leave a linear scar in the back part of the head.
In the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique, the hair follicles are taken one by one and implanted to the deficient areas. While in the FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) procedure, a skin band containing hair is taken from the back of the scalp. Although the FUE method does not leave a scar and it is most preferred, it may be necessary to use the FUT hair restoration technique in some of the cases. The technique to be preferred should be decided after hair and scalp analysis by considering the priorities of the patient.
How long does a hair transplant procedure take?
The hair transplant procedure is completed within a few hours depending on the amount of hair loss. The average time taken for hair transplantation is around 5 – 8 hours. If the balding area is too large, more than one session may be required to complete the treatment. FUT is a suitable technique if you want a large number of grafting in a single session.
Who can undergo hair transplant surgery?
You need to make an ideal hair transplant candidate before undergoing the actual procedure. The ideal candidate will be checked and analyzed through the process of diagnosis. The doctor will examine your condition and perform some mandatory blood tests to check whether you are medically fit or not. Apart from the medical condition, there are other factors as well that make a person the right candidate for hair transplant. These factors include age, the pattern of baldness, the density of hair at the donor area, etc.
How much will hair transplant surgery hurt?
Well! You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised when you’ll come to know that hair transplant procedure causes no pain and just a little discomfort. The hair transplant surgery is like getting a filling done at the dentist. You have anesthetic so there is no pain but you may not like being at the dentist. Similarly, the hair transplantation is also performed by giving local anesthesia to the patient for eliminating pain.
Which is the best technique of hair restoration?
The best method for your hair transplantation depends on your suitability and requirements. There are different factors that help in finalizing the hair transplant method for your surgery. These factors include the density of your donor area, your grade of baldness, texture, the flexibility of scalp and hair, financial budget, etc.
Will everyone know about my hair transplant surgery?
There can be some swelling and redness on the surgical area which is noticeable. You may require a minimum of 2 – 3 weeks out of the loop due to the healing process. You can wear a suitable cap or hat if you don’t want people to know about your hair transplant. After 15 – 20 days, the surgical area will get healed and it will look normal; however, you’ll not get the new hair growth by then.
How long will I need to take rest?
Resting is required after every surgical treatment. You’ll need to take it easy for a couple of days after the surgical hair restoration procedure. Follow the prescribed instructions, take the medicines on time and allow your scalp to recover efficiently. Avoid over-exerting yourself and leave the physical activities like gym, running and any sexual activity for at least 10 – 15 days.
Will I lose more hair because of the surgery?
When a hair transplant is done in the areas where there are some existing hair follicles, you could possibly lose some of those hairs. It is called ‘shock loss’ and it occurs especially if the hair is weak and miniaturizing. However, it is common for most of the patients to lose some hairs after surgery, but the count of losing hair depends on the strength of your hair strands. If your hair is too weak, it may not return, but if it is strong, then it will remain.
Is hair transplant scarring noticeable?
Follicular unit grafting requires tiny incisions on the recipient area and any resultant scarring is usually invisible to the naked eye. There will also be small unnoticeable scars at the donor area (the back of your scalp), which will be hidden under existing hair. However, the FUT procedure results in a linear scar on the donor area, from where the strip is removed.
What about the recovery/healing time after the treatment?
A special bandage is applied to the head section of the patient after the surgery and the patient is discharged a few hours later. The post-operative pain is minimal and the patient is provided with pain relievers. The patient can usually go back to work by keeping the head covered after a 3 – 4 day home rest. The first medical wound dressing is done on the 5th day. You’ll recover totally within 8 – 10 days after the treatment.
Will the results be permanent?
Yes, the hair transplant outcomes are permanent because the hair follicles that are implanted are genetically-resistant against baldness; so, they will tend to grow over your lifetime. If you had large areas of baldness before hair transplantation, then you may still notice hair loss on different areas of your head and may require exploring the option of another hair transplant procedure in the future.
