Follicular Unit Transplant is a highly advanced technique for hair transplant in which a large section of follicular units is extracted from the donor area, making it a less time-consuming process. It creates a pattern for natural hair growth and thus, it is highly recommended to people who have large bald areas on their head. This procedure extracts an entire strip from the donor area, where the hair fall is less, with much thicker and still hair growth. The removal/extraction of such a large strip usually leaves a scar on the scalp. This large strip of hair follicles is divided into small grafts/units, which usually consist of one to two follicles. These follicles contain sebaceous gland, which is an oil gland, with nerves, tiny muscles and some fine vellum hairs. These follicular units/grafts are present in thousands. These thousand follicles are placed in a single sitting, creating a flow of natural growth pattern. The bald area of the scalp, where the tiny incisions are made, is also known as 'recipient area.'

Follicular Unit Transplant Procedure: -

  • The scalp is orderly anaesthetized.

  • A strip of hair tissue is extracted from the donor area on your head, where hair fall is less with much thicker growth. These areas are usually the back and sides of the patient's head.

  • Before moving further, the doctor sutures the area from where the extraction/removal has been performed. It can leave a fine scar, which can be easily covered by the remaining hair.

  • This large strip is then intersected into small sections. There are individual sections of follicular units which go through this dissection under the microscope.

  • For the placement of these follicular grafts/units, the doctor drills minuscule holes on the scalp, where you have faced hair loss. These units are gently inserted into these holes.

  • A disinfecting solution is gently and evenly applied on your scalp.

  • The donor area (usually back of your head or sides) is dressed with bandages.

For further protection, you will have to wear a cap or bandana for a few days. This process usually takes 6-8 hours in which approximately 5000 unit/grafts can be transplanted. This process generally takes 10 to 14 days of recovery. This is a permanent procedure. You may face heavy hair fall in the beginning but after some time, your hair growth will improve. After 3-6 months, natural hair growth can be seen with healthy looking hairs.

Precautions Before and After Surgery

Pre FUT Hair Transplant Instructions:

  • If you are taking medicines like aspirin that makes your blood thin, then stop taking it a few days before the surgery.

  • At least one relative/friend is recommended to accompany the patient on the day of the hair transplant procedure, who can drive and take you back home.

  • Say no to alcohol and smoking for at least 2-3 weeks before your hair transplant surgery.

  • Stop all Protein shakes and supplements for 7 days before the hair restoration surgery.

Post FUT Hair Transplant Instructions:

  • Treat your scalp very gently and let your doctor remove the bandage.

  • Do not consume aspirin or any blood thinners, because it may cause bleeding in the transplanted area.

  • Use a soft pillow while sleeping and the sleeping position must be correct.

  • Strictly avoid any strenuous activity (like gym, heavy weight lifting, running, etc) for approximately 4 weeks after the procedure.

  • Abstain from smoking and alcohol for a few days post-surgery.

  • Always cover your head with a hat or take an umbrella while stepping out of the home.

Advantages of FUT

  • By opting for FUT procedure, a large count of grafts can be implanted in one session.

  • FUT method is more affordable as compared to FUE hair transplant.

  • The patient with a weak donor area at the back and sides of the scalp can go for this procedure.

  • It provides a better yield of hair and enhanced hair growth results.

Side Effects of FUT Hair Transplant

  • The biggest disadvantage or side-effect of FUT procedure is that it makes use of stitches & incisions and thus, it causes scarring at the donor site.

  • The patients can feel numbness, itchiness or swelling for a few days after the surgery and they need to take extra care and precautions while opting for this procedure.

  • Because of being a completely invasive procedure, thus the recovery period is longer in FUT in comparison to the FUE technique.

Cost of FUT Hair Transplant

The FUT cost majorly depends on the number of hair grafts required to implant on the patient’s head to achieve the desired hair growth results. However, the estimated cost of FUT hair transplantation is around Rs. 20 per graft to Rs. 40 per graft. The efficiency and experience of the surgeon also play a major role in FUT hair transplant surgery.
